Jacob wrestles and is blessed with forgiveness for an injustice done to his brother. An insistent widow wrestles with an unjust judge and receives justice. These two stories illustrate an important principle about God and our relationship to his kingdom.
Russ Hewett explains an Orthodox icon of the Ascension of Jesus and explains how Jesus refounded (not replaced) Israel. Israel had been founded as a nation without an earthly king. They cried out for a king like the other nations and God allowed it. This led to a radical change in their society and economy. Jesus came and lived out the original vocation of Israel. God responded my making him King of kings and Lord of lords. How might Christians today see this as a model for how we are to live faithfully within our nation-states?
