"And having disarmed the powers and authorities, Christ made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." This statement by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Colossians reveals that on the cross, Jesus was up to something more than simply providing a way for people to have their individual sins forgiven. Jesus was also disarming the systems of power and authority that are in rebellion against God. In a presidential campaign season, we see again the powers and authorities jockeying for position but the follower of Jesus must resist the temptation to be carried away and corrupted by these powers and authorities. We serve the One who exposed them for what they are; a poor substitute for the King of kings.
